The Lehigh Valley is rich in history and culture. Comprised primarily of Lehigh and Northampton Counties, the "Valley" is in close proximity to New York City and Philadelphia. Residents often drive to the Poconos for skiing in the winter and boating in the summer. The three most densely populated areas are Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, which are geograpically close to Routes 22, 33 and 78. The Lehigh Valley is unique because travel from a city to a rural area can take only minutes. Originally, the Lehigh Valley was part of Bucks County; it was establishd in 1682 and became Northampton County in 1752. Lehigh and Northampton County became separate counties in 1812. European immigrants came to the Valley in the 1700s and by 1730 many German settlers had settled in the Valley after being attracted by William Penn's descriptions of the land. The valuable farmland in the area attracted thousands of German settlers during the 1800's. For more information go to www.lehighvalleyhistory.com |
